November 2010 ePals

Page history last edited by Barb Rehmeyer 13 years, 4 months ago

The National Education Technology Standards for Students (NETS), which have been adopted by RSU 20, suggests this for Communication and Collaboration:

Students use digital media and environments to communicate and work collaboratively, including at a distance, to support individual learning and contribute to the learning of others.

It has been a challenge to find SAFE ways that students can communicate and collaborate using the internet. Then we found ...

ePals is designed for schools so students can connect and learn in a protected network. Every elementary student in RSU 20 has an email address through ePals. If you have not received your classlist of email addresses yet, please contact Tracy or Barb.

With ePals, all student messages, in and out, must be approved by a monitor - the classroom teacher.

The Access Level can also be adjusted for each student.

Currently, Kindergarten -3rd Grades are set to "District." 4th and 5th Grades are set to "Internet" so they are able to participate in  Bibliokids.

This access can be changed by asking Tracy or Barb. The chart on the right indicates all the options.

Find an ePal Partner

Last year, quite a few classrooms had ePal partners within RSU 20. Both students and teachers have asked us when they are going to be able to do ePals this year. If you would like an ePal partner class within RSU 20, please let everyone know in the "Comments" section at the bottom. Please indicate the following:

  1. Grade level
  2. School location
  3. Number of students
  4. How often you want to correspond
  5. Student partners or Class partners

For example: Kindergarten class at Frankfort would like to be ePals with another class. We want to write from class to  class once a month.

Then if a teacher is interested they would "Reply" and contact that teacher.

Sort of a "Craig's List" for ePals!

We hope we have invited all teachers to join this wiki. If you cannot Comment and you would like to, please "request access." We don't want to leave anyone out. Let us know if you have trouble joining PBworks.

If you want to venture outside of the RSU 20 for ePals, you can go to the ePals Search site and connect with a partner in the United States or the world. ePals has members in over 200 countries.Or if you have a connection somewhere, you can use ePals to correspond with that class using ePals. Please note your student's Access Level may need to be changed. You can also join collaborative projects at the ePals site.

Please ask us if you need help with your ePals or PBworks accounts.

Bibliokids is a wiki administered by Miss Walz, the librarian at Searsport, Frankfort and Stockton Springs schools, and another way to collaborate. It is a place where children can talk about the books they are reading. It is also a place where teachers could have the children post their book reports. This way their friends could get ideas about what book they should read next.

There is a link for both Bibliokids and ePals on the RSU 20 Elementary Library homepage.

Journey North also has collaborative projects to engage your class in the study of wildlife migration and seasonal change. The Monarch Butterfly project is interesting. For those classrooms who released monarchs, their update reports that this week, "The first monarchs have reached their winter home in Mexico." If you are not successful finding a partner through ePals, you may be able to find a  partner school at the Journey North website.
